Lipstick manufacture by lipstick mixer machine

July 24, 2018

As with most other types of makeup, lipstick is typically, but not exclusively, worn by women. Lipstick is a cosmetic product containing pigments, oils, waxes, and emollients that apply color, texture, and protection to the lips. Wax provides the structure to the solid lipstick.

Lipsticks may be made from several waxes such as beeswax, ozokerite and candelilla wax etc. Various oils and fats are used in lipsticks, such as olive oil, mineral oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, and petrolatum etc. Lipsticks get their colors from pigments dispersed into a mixture of oils and waxes. Lipstick is the least expensive and most popular cosmetic in the world today.

The Process of Lipstick Manufacturing

Lipsticks are generally manufactured in small batches. The manufacturing process is easiest to understand if it is viewed as three separate steps: melting and mixing the lipstick; pouring the mixture into the tube; and packaging the product for sale.

A typical melting and mixing process would be as follows:

• First, the raw ingredients for the lipstick are melted and mixed—separately because of the different types of ingredients used. One mixture contains the solvents, a second contains the oils, and a third contains the fats and waxy materials. These are heated in separate stainless steel or ceramic containers.

• The solvent solution and liquid oils are then mixed with the color pigments. The mixture passes through a roller mill, grinding the pigment to avoid a “grainy” feel to the lipstick.

• After the pigment mass is ground and mixed, it is added to the hot wax mass until a uniform color and consistency is obtained. The fluid lipstick can then be strained and molded, or it may be poured into pans and stored for future molding.

• If the fluid lipstick is to be used immediately, the melt is maintained at temperature, with agitation, so that trapped air escapes. If the lipstick mass is stored, before it is used it must be reheated, checked for color consistency, and adjusted to specifications, then maintained at the melt temperature (with agitation) until it can be poured.

The Problem of Conventional Lipstick Mixer Machine

The process is subject to a number of problems:

• Long processing times are required to melt the waxes; solid pieces may require breaking up before they can be added to the kettle.

• Pigment grinds and pre-dispersions are difficult to disperse into the oil and wax medium due to the widely differing viscosity.

• The end product may require passing through a mill to obtain the required consistency and homogeneity.

The Solution of Lipstick Production

Product quality and consistency can be improved and processing times dramatically reduced by using a Ginhong high shear batch mixer. Operation is as follows:

The oil and waxes are weighed into the vessel and heated. The mixer is started when the product is partially liquified. The high speed rotation of the rotor creates a powerful suction, drawing the wax particles and other ingredients into the workhead.

Centrifugal force drives the liquid and solid ingredients to the periphery of the workhead where the materials are subjected to intense shear in the gap between the tips of the rotor blades and the inner wall of the stator. The product is then forced out through the stator back into the body of the mix.

The intake and expulsion of materials through the workhead ensures that the contents of the vessel passes many times through the workhead. The combination of heat, vigorous mixing and particle size reduction accelerates the melting process of the wax, and rapidly disperses the pigment grind into the oil and wax medium to produce a homogeneous end product.

The Advantages of Ginhong Lipstick Mixing Equipment

• Greatly speed up mixing time

• Improved consistency and product texture

• Some stages of production can be removed

• The reduced particle size and more uniform premix produced dramatically reduce the time taken at the milling stage
