Paper coating preparation process by coating mixer machine

A coating is a covering that is applied to the surface of an object, generally referred to as the substrate. Some coatings may be applied to change the surface properties of the substrate, such as adhesion, wettability, corrosion resistance, or wear resistance. In other cases, e.g. semiconductor device fabrication (where the substrate is a wafer), the coating adds a completely new property, such as a magnetic response or electrical conductivity, and forms an essential part of the finished product.

The Process of Paper Coating Preparation

Paper coatings are typically made up of pigments and binders (also called adhesives). Pigments are usually made of refined clay (which enhances gloss and ink holdout), titanium dioxide (which enhances brightness and opacity), or calcium carbonate (which enhances ink absorbency, and brightness). Binders are added to increase the adhesion of the particles of pigment to each other and to the paper fibers.

Modern coatings may contain unique combinations of innovative raw materials, but they still rely on good mixing. Basic paper coating preparation can be described by five steps.

• The slurry is diluted to the required working strength and held in a storage tank

• The binder is prepared respectively before being mixed with the slurry.

• Other additives such as waxes, coloring etc may be added at this stage

• The finished coating may be passed through a filter to eliminate agglomerates or impurities

• The coating is then applied to the paper or board by a lot of methods

The Problem of Conventional Coating Mixer Machine

Using conventional coating mixer machine may encounter a few problems:

• Agglomerates and impurities present in the clay slurry are not disintegrated by agitation

• These diversion to the coating machine and result in defects (e.g. holes) in the coating surface.

• Removal of agglomerates by filtration leads to reduced output, and increased waste, costs and processing time

The Solution of Paper Coating Manufacturing

Ginhong has designed a series of mixers for paper coating manufacturing. Multi-shaft mixers are equipped with two or more independently driven agitators deliver both high-shear agitation and laminar bulk flow within a wide viscosity range: from water-like to several hundred thousand centipoise.

For very challenging formulations, planetary disperser mixers can be utilized. They feature two or more blades that rotate on their respective axes while revolving around the mixing vessel.

Both multi-shaft mixer and planetary disperser mixer ensure that the product fed to the coating plant is free of agglomerate. An inline homogenizer can be used as circulation system to accelerate the dispersion process and produce an agglomerate-free slurry in a fraction of the time taken by agitation alone.

Mixer selection is based on a number of factors, including viscosity profile, shear requirement, order of addition and throughput. Coating plant can benefit a lot from optimal mixer.
