The definitions of homogenize, homogenizer and homogenization

March 26, 2013

If something is homogenized, it is changed so that all its parts are similar or the same, especially in a way that is undesirable.

Homogenize generally happens at the same time with emulsify and disperse when cream and milk are mixed, dispersed, emulsified and homogenized.

Homogenize has two functions as to reduce the products (generally emulsions and suspensions) to small particles of uniform size. And the second function is to make the small particles distribute evenly in the liquids.

Homogenizer is a homogenizing machine used to homogenize products as cream and milk. In some European countries, homogenizer is usually called homogenizator.

Homogenizers are generally classified by high pressure homogenizer, centrifugal homogenizer, colloid mill, ultrasonic homogenizer and high shear homogenizer etc.

High pressure homogenizer, centrifugal homogenizer and ultrasonic homogenizer have the disadvantages of complicated structure, high cost, heavy power-consumption and inconvenient maintenance etc. Their applications are limited.

The advantages of high shear homogenizer include low cost, fine particle size, high efficiency and high quality etc compared with traditional homogenizers. What we’re talking about in our products category is high shear homogenizer.

High shear homogenizer

High shear homogenizer or called shear homogenizer is the most popular homogenizer now in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food and chemicals industries. It’s made of one rotor and one stator. Some high shear homogenizer also has housing for the rotor and stator.

Batch homogenizer or called intermittence homogenizer can be mounted inside the mixing tank from top, bottom or side. It often works with agitator for a batch process.

Inline homogenizer or called pipeline homogenizer or homogenizer pump is often connected with the mixing tank by circulation pipes. It’s suitable for making big quantity continuous process.

When the homogenizer is equipped with the mixing tanks, we usually called it mixer homogenizer or homogenizer mixer.

Homogenization is the act or process of making something homogeneous or uniform in consistency by homogenizers.
