Rotor stator homogenizer – superb tool in homogenizing materials

November 23, 2013

In order to meet the various homogenizing needs of labs and manufacturers, many rotor stator homogenizer models have been developed and made available to the market. Such machines are practically easy to configure in order to satisfy different application requirements in the aspect of homogenization. Today, there is a wide array of stator and rotor homogenizers, all of which are able to deliver varied levels of dispersion.

Creation of emulsion

Emulsification is a vital process in the two-emulsion, micro-encapsulation step. Primary emulsion is easily prepared with the use of a rotor stator homogenization machine. As a homogenizer is utilized, the resulting emulsion is achieved, which is characterized by the reduction in the size of the emulsion droplets.

Reduction of droplet size

The size of the droplet, on the other hand, is determined by the generated shear forces in the turbulent spot located within the space between the moving rotor and stationary stator. The size of emulsion droplets lessens as homogenization duration and intensity increases. It only proves that droplet size is dependent on a number of factors, such as viscosity, volume ratio of continuous to dispersed phases, total size of volume, and the general design of the rotor stator homogenizer.

The levels of homogenization using such rotor and stator machine are affected by the existing interior-based circulatory action. Actually, this action is determined by the rotor and stator assembly. Experiments that utilize large homogenizers of this type are done, with the circulation rate using a typical flow model. An alternative approach was also done using external flow-through homogenizing process. The results can be used as a basis for the study of major emulsification of both liquid phases while undergoing a mini-encapsulation process.

Application of moderate shearing

Rotor-stator homogenizing tools can also be used for general purposes, depending on the kind of materials to be processed. It is possible that moderate shearing actions are done in order to effect general homogenizing and blending processes.

How is this done? Coarse stator part is combined with pumping fin-like pumping rotor. The stator is utilized together with a special rotor component that assures high throughput. Such a generator will deliver desired throughputs by as much as four times more than any other types of generators. The mixer is able to produce the required moderate shear, while delivering a strong pumping effect.

Such generator is typically utilized as an alternative to the pump. It can also act in compliments with the pump for a much improved flow results. It is utilized in specific machines that operate in a number of stages, ensuring easy and consistent flow of highly viscous fluid materials. This process is often applied to specific materials such as miscible liquids, large agglomerates, those with high circulation rate, and shear sensitive liquids.

Because of the sheer versatility and high effectiveness of rotor stator homogenizer machine, it has become a permanent fixture in most major labs and research facilities. Many manufacturers also utilize this equipment, depending on the materials being processed, if only for its superb efficiency in delivering the desired result.
