Ribbon blender – its unique mixing uses, options, and features

One of the most utilized industrial blenders in a commercial setting is the ribbon blender, which typically consists of a special U-shaped and horizontal trough component. It possesses a uniquely-fabricated ribbon-type agitator, which is made up of two sets of inner and exterior helical types. While the outer ribbon is the one that moves components and substances in a particular direction, the inner ribbon moves them in the opposite end.

The durable ribbons of the blender perform rotating action at approximately 300 fpm, moving substances both laterally and radially; this ensures thorough mixing within short cycle times. Normally, ribbon agitators are meant for blends that are 40 to 100 percent of the capacity of the ribbon blender.

Some models have alternate agitator components for their equipment. Such paddle type can be added to the blender to move substances in opposite, lateral directions, and in a radial manner. It is a special paddle design that’s used when friable materials are blended. It is also ideal in blending batches that’s 15 percent of the total capacity of the blender.

The following are a list of features and options of a ribbon blender, each of which are intended to make the operation of this machine faster and more efficient:

1. Knife gate

Knife gate valve offers a positive and automatic shut off. It can be used for either pneumatic or manual operation.

2. Valve

A special valve is an essential component and feature in every A Series stock ribbon blender.

3. Flush plug design

Flush plug design removes dead spots between the valve face and trough bottom. It is a great option for minor solids or liquids that need to be mixed. It is also applied when perfect blending is necessary.

4. Flush ball valves

Flush ball valve is a vital component when the mixing tool is utilized for liquid or fluid-like products. It provides a positive shut off while retaining any existing fluid without any leak.

5. Standard stuffing box

Stuffing box component includes Teflon-made and impregnated-braided packing. It is available in split for any cleaning purposes.

6. Spherical valve design

The spherical valve of the ribbon blender is meant to minimize any dead space. It is available for use for both manual and pneumatic operations.

7. Air / liquid seal stuffing box

Air / liquid seal stuffing box includes a lantern-type ring that’s meant for low-pressure purging to avoid any intrusion of substances that may potentially threaten the seal and shaft integrity.

8. Sanitary stuffing box

These stuffing boxes of ribbon mixers are easy to disassemble with the use of hand tools. It is also meant for cleaning between batch mixing. Its special design includes a specially-molded Chevron and Teflon packing ring.

9. Paddle agitator

The paddle agitator of a ribbon mixer / blender runs at around two-thirds of the speed of the typical ribbon. Its special feature is that it can offer much gentler yet thorough blending while developing less heat.

10. Continuous ribbon

Continuous type of ribbon is designed for central discharge. Because of its versatility, this component is a popular choice for many blenders. It offers vigorous and intense axial and lateral movement of bulk materials.
