The pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries today have an unending requirement for a certain breed of products technically called ‘semisolids’ or ‘emulsions’, or what we commonly refer to as ointments, creams, toothpaste, gels and so on. These products contain components that do not dissolve in each other, and therefore need an alternative method to keep them together without the chance of separating into the individual elements. The process that has been the most successful and widely adopted is the vacuum homogenizing process (also known as vacuum emulsification).

A typical vacuum homogenizer mixer contains all the components that contribute towards the manufacture of an emulsion. The individual ingredients are first loaded into a tank; they are then mixed by means of high speed mixing using centrifugal force, resulting in a suspended state where though the ingredients are still separate and retain their individual properties, they are distributed evenly across the entire spectrum of the final product. This process requires several stages of alternate heating and cooling, and the mixer also contains the necessary provisions for this purpose. The mixer also requires maintenance and de-aeration, and includes the equipment for these requirements as well. It works on certain standard preset conditions, which can alternatively be customized as per the specific need.

The amount of final product that is generated at the end of the homogenizing process makes the heavy duty set-up economically viable. While the initial investment is on the higher side, the operating costs are low, and the batches of product that can be obtained at a time are very large. The presets and smart technology of the vacuum mixers make it possible to program a setting once and then repeat the same for future uses, thus minimizing manual labour that would otherwise have been required to ensure that the composition and consistency of the product remained the same. This is crucial when it comes to pharmaceutical and cosmetic requirements, as they rely completely on the exact percentage of each ingredient in the final product, which is almost a sacred quantity that cannot be changed if the product must sell.

In all, the vacuum homogenizer mixer technology is the silent hero that is responsible for the huge success of creams, lotions, ointments, etc, always making sure that there is no shortfall in the global supply of these products that have become items of everyday use that the world today will probably not be able to survive without.
